One of the biggest difficulties in creating a new e-shop is supplying the e-shop with the company's products. A business can trade from a few tens, up to several hundreds / thousands of products. It is extremely difficult and time-consuming to list a company's products one by one in an e-shop. For this reason, there are various tools for mass import of products from excel or XML files or directly from the ERP, commercial program of the company (if it has one).
The most common way and the one that we will develop in this article is the mass import of products from an Excel file. You can easily import dozens / hundreds of products into your e-shop from excel files either by preparing the file yourself or by your supplier.
Preparation
Before you start you should install on the computer your Microsoft Excel (any version) that comes with Microsoft Office, or if you don't have it you can also install Open Office which has a free version of excel.
Download GUIDE FILE and open it in the Excel program.
In the file you will see that each column contains a different piece of information that will be needed in the e-shop. Columns with an asterisk are mandatory. Each line you add is also a different product from your catalog. Thus, starting to create the excel with your products, you will fill in the corresponding characteristic under each column.
For your convenience, we have filled in a product as an example in the second line.
During the process you should keep in mind:
- The product code or accounting code or SKU must be unique / different for each product. If your products do not have a code you can define a serial number along with some symbols. e.g. RED0001
- The title of the product should not exceed 20 words and not less than 4 words.
- Google REQUIRES each product to have a unique title to differentiate it from the rest. e.g. don't put 2 products with the exact same title try to add a feature that distinguishes one product from another. E.g. Women's blouse with rhinestones, Women's blouse with asymmetric shoulders.
- The short description is necessary because it will appear on google when someone searches for our products. It should definitely be more descriptive and larger in size than the product title. For better results on Google, we recommend that the description be at least 20 words and no more than 40.
- The detailed description is not mandatory to be completed. We usually fill in some special characteristics there (garment composition or technical characteristics in the case of electronics).
- The product category is filled in exactly as it will be in your e-shop with a tree-like layout. e.g. Female > Blouses > Polo or PC > Laptops > Gaming Laptops. Note that you should with the symbol > to distinguish the subcategory from the category it belongs to.
- If you have color charts or size charts or in general product combinations / variations, you can fill in the available sizes and/or colors separated by the comma symbol (,) e.g. green, blue, red, purple, yellow
- We fill in the weight of the product in kilograms (e.g. 0.2 kg) and ONLY if we want the shipping costs of the order to are automatically calculated in the shopping cart from the weight of the products.
- In the column STOCK we put the pieces available for purchase.
- In the column TIMH WITH VAT put the final price that will be displayed in the e-shop
- In the column PHOTO put the name of the photo of the specific product as we have it on our computer. It is recommended for easier management when you save the photos to rename them with the product code. e.g. if the product code is RED0001, rename the photo to RED0001.jpg
Caution! Never write titles and descriptions in CAPS. All sentences should only have the first letter in uppercase and all the rest in lowercase. Also, never leave empty lines or format the texts. Do not bold, italicize or change the font size or color anywhere. Without any formatting just write the text below each cell.
